HAVE WE GONE MAD?
The term “common sense” is defined (Merriam-Webster) as “sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts.” In my view, common sense is that which is, or should be, obvious to any reasonably intelligent and aware person. As we observe daily, common sense is not only NOT common; it is on the verge of extinction.
Ebola: It’s a Killer, You Morons
The Ebola virus was discovered in 1976, and there have been periodic outbreaks since then, but nothing as broad-based as the current epidemic in Western Africa. Scenarios vary from minor concern to grave predictions of a modern “plague.” Government officials suggest that it is difficult to become infected and that concerns of spreading outside the “hot zone” are minimal. Some researchers suggest that it is or could be airborne, and if so, “all hell could break loose.”
The concern by the Obama administration over global warming forecasts dire consequences, despite much evidence to the contrary, and virtually all data based on models and simulations, many of which are suspect. The concern over Ebola appears much less so, despite the reality of data based on current facts projecting 1.4 million cases in coming months – with a 70% + mortality rate!
Common sense would suggest that this potential pandemic be addressed using epidemiological science, great caution against exposure, quarantine of known cases in limited, restricted, and localized facilities. So what does the administration do?
Refuses to prohibit airplane flights to and from the center of the epidemic in Western Africa.
Sends 4-5,000 American military into the hot zone, directly exposing them to the most concentrated possible risk scenario. By the way, this is NOT what the military is for! Ask Patton.
Takes cases of infection and distributes them throughout the country: Atlanta, Nebraska, Dallas, and now, Bethesda. There appears to be no program to limit and isolate treatment.
Now, appoints a “czar” to oversee the Ebola issue – not a medical or health professional with a solid background in epidemiology and infectious diseases, but a political hack, formerly chief of staff to Joe Biden! Where are the Surgeon General (see note below) and the head of the CDEC in all of this? Where is the World Health Organization? Where are the rest of the world governments in picking up their fair share of the tab, and providing their share of needed staffing to limit the spread of the disease? Where is the common sense in any of this?
Note: Republicans have held up Obama’s appointee as too partisan and radical. Ok, so pick a new one already. You don’t always get your first choice!
The Gay thing: It’s an Agenda
Despite 5,000 years of marriage as an institution involving a man and a woman, the cowardly courts of America have caved one after another to political pressure essentially destroying this fundamental institution. It no longer signifies a bond intended as a lifetime commitment to create a biological family of parents and children as a stable building block of the community and of society. It now simply requires that you say you love someone. Anyone. This is consonant with typical efforts in the law to accord benefits based on desired outcomes - age-old tenets of religious, spiritual and cultural beliefs, not so much. The natural progression is: man and woman-marriage-procreation (assumes compatible biology)-children-family. Something about these other arrangements defies common sense.
The military has a collection of special needs based on its unique mission, and both the training and field combat arenas in which that mission is implemented. Among those needs are absolute loyalty, camaraderie, trust, and common bonds. Yes, there were times when segregation raised its ugly head, and women weren’t permitted to serve. (There are still questions of women in ground combat roles, both cultural, and in physical abilities, often requiring lowered standards of performance.) One would think that a lifestyle engaged in by 1-2% of the population, abnormal by definition; unnatural by observation; and in conflict with prevailing social values, might conflict with the aforementioned needs. Once again, political correctness and desire for a specific outcome, trumps common sense. We now have Corporal Klinger. “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” was a far more realistic compromise.
The push for acceptance of gay people, tolerance of their lifestyle and non-discrimination in various public benefits - reasonable and fair propositions - have progressed into demands for embracing, normalizing and promulgating the gay community and its lifestyle. So much so, that homosexuality is taught in grade schools as simply an alternative, as if it were choosing vanilla over chocolate.
Tolerance of homosexuality is preached, but intolerance of a heterosexual tradition is practiced. The mayor of Houston, Texas, an avowed Lesbian, went so far as to wage war on churches, demanding transcripts of sermons that might conflict with her lifestyle, or comment negatively on her personally. This is a mockery of our First Amendment, and of common sense.
Then there is the issue of gender, with a small but vocal minority suggesting that sex is not defined by biology, but by choice. If a boy wants to be a girl, then he should be allowed to adopt that gender, play in girl’s sports, use girl’s restrooms, and dress accordingly. It matters not what the chromosomal make-up is, or what genitals are possessed. Our sex is simply what we prefer it to be. The reality is, you may call a dog a cat – but it is still a dog. Common sense should tell us that.
Being American: That is Who We Are!
Virtually every nation around the world, and throughout history, has a national flag, a single or predominant language, defined and settled borders (notwithstanding that some are not so settled, and are prone to adjustment), an established history and a collection of customs.
We are Americans. Our flag is Old Glory; the Stars and Stripes; the Red, White and Blue. Our flag grew from our first 13 united colonies, to the 50 states of which we are comprised today. Our flag is not merely the fabric from which it is woven, or the colors that make up its design. No, our flag is the symbol of the blood lost, the price paid, the wars fought, and the lives sacrificed to secure and protect our freedom. Common sense, if nothing else, should guide our actions of reverence and respect for this great symbol. In this country, that flag is supreme, and NO flag should fly above it. To any American, visitor, or guest on our soil, that is common sense – or damn well better be, and we owe no apology for demanding that. If you have a hard time with these simple rules, and a few others dealing with proper respect of the flag, then you may be in the wrong country. Kindly consult with your local embassy and request a transfer.
In this country, we speak English. We try to make reasonable accommodations for other languages as a gesture of goodwill, not as a duty. A nation is strengthened through a common language; it is diminished without it. Laws and practices to the contrary defy common sense, and ultimately serve no purpose but to divide.
Without physical definition, there is no way to tell where one nation’s sovereign soil begins and another ends, and sovereignty is a sole right of nationhood. The right and duty to maintain and protect unlawful entry across our borders is essential to preserving our sovereign status. Without that status, we cease to exist as a nation. Our borders range from sea to shining sea; from our neighbors to the north and south, whose boundaries we also respect. Why do we do that? For the same common sense reasons we expect them to respect ours. In recent years, some 20 million have failed to respect those borders. Common sense tells us that we are long overdue in doing something about that.
Being Christian: Contrary to Recent Pronouncements
The history and founding principles of this nation are based on Christian teachings and philosophy; they reflect the Founder’s almost universal belief in a Creator in the image of the God of the Bible, often a Deist view of a natural God. Those beliefs have guided this country for its 230 years of existence. Even today, 74% of Americans describe themselves as Christians, while perhaps 1.5% identify as Muslims.
When Barack Obama says, “… we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation; we consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values,” he lies. When Barack Obama says, “Muslims built the ‘very fabric of our nation,’” he lies. When Barack Obama says, we are “one of the top Muslim countries in the world,” he lies.
Common sense tells us that when Barack Obama speaks of the religious orientation and history of America, HE LIES. Thank God he is wrong; the very values he diminishes are what gave us religious freedom and religious tolerance in the first place. Find that in a Muslim country.
Personal Choice: It’s the Consequences, Stupid
Alcohol (within limits) is a legal drug. Marijuana (with exceptions) is generally an illegal drug. One may argue the merits and demerits of both, but they share one thing in common: no one is forcing you to use either; they are used as a matter of personal choice. There has been a tendency for decades to not only demonize, but penalize and criminalize behaviors that some judge to be unacceptable. Even the car one chooses to drive has become the target of penalties or rewards. As for sexual behaviors, don’t even start down THAT path!
Why do some people have this need to judge how others run their lives? Because they can. They can because the line between behavior and consequences has been purposely blurred. Thus, the person who drinks, is a POTENTIAL menace on the road; the person who smokes some pot, is a POTENTIALLY neglectful parent; the driver of a Prius is entitled to a tax-payer funded bonus, while the innocent driver of a “gas guzzler” may be penalized.
It’s one more form of the madness which afflicts our society today, and which government gladly feeds off, rewarded with added taxes, penalties, and bureaucracies. Wouldn’t it make more sense to focus blame and punishment on actual consequences, rather than perceived potentials? Penalize the drunk in the car crash, not the social drinker. Hold accountable the parent for dereliction of parental duties, not smoking a few joints. Get out of the business of making choices for consumers in food, cars, light bulbs and anything else they CHOOSE to purchase. And stay the hell out of the bedrooms of consenting adults.
You’re Offended? Too Bad – Grow Up
So you don’t like the name, “Washington Redskins.” You have an option – buy the team and change it. It is a privately owned enterprise; the owner can call the team whatever he wants. That YOU are offended by his or her choice is of no consequence. Either buy the team and change the name, don’t attend their games or buy their products, or shut up. What gives YOU the right to dictate the personal choices of others?
You’re black, African, African-American, Hispanic, Mexican, Latino (a), person of color (what ever in the hell that is), Transgendered, Gender Neutral… what is it with all the names. Let me simplfy this for you. If you live in this country; live under its constitution; enjoy the freedom and benefits provided by it, then you are an American. If you want to talk about your country of origin; the home of your ancestors; or your religion or sexual preferences, go ahead. But you are an American. Please understand that when we talk about Americans, you are all included. We don’t need subcategories.
When I was a kid, we had BB and pellet guns; we had cap pistols; we had bendable rubber knives; and we made “weapons” from a stick of wood, a clothespin, and a rubber band. If none of those were handy, we had spitballs. No one committed mayhem on their fellow classmates or citizens! (Well, there was that one crazy guy in the 8th grade, Robert Sichel, who killed and disembodied his neighbor lady. Note: HE WAS CRAZY. And by the way, he didn’t use a gun.)
Under our “zero tolerance” wacko policies today, we expel a kid for forming a “gun” by creatively eating portions of his PB&J sandwich (grilled cheese works even better); we put a kid into sexual predator counselling for trying to kiss a girl; and we treat a sailing rubber band as if it were a round from an AR-15. Something is very, very wrong.
Where do we go from here?
We need to lighten up, loosen up, respect the rights of others, stop government from ruling our lives and instead protect and preserve our choices and our freedoms. We need to rediscover common sense. All of us need to do those things and insist upon the same from others; from all Americans, regardless of where they came from, how much skin pigmentation they possess, and what they do in their bedrooms, kitchens, or back yards.

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked."Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad." "How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”
