2015: One Year Closer to 1984
With 2015 upon us, there are many “wishing” us a wonderful, prosperous, healthy, happy and successful New Year. I’m one of them, sharing happy New Year wishes for one and all. But while the sentiment is honest and hopeful, the reality is not supportive. I would like to share the traditional optimism for each New Year, but I cannot. It’s not that I’m a pessimist - far from it. I would LOVE to be positive and uplifting about the prospects for 2015 forward. Looking around the social, financial, political and cultural landscape, however, I have more concern than confidence. 1984 gets closer every year.
A new Gallup Poll on the Most Admired man and woman in America had atop the list, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. OBAMA AND CLINTON? If there was a societal canary in the coalmine, this is it. Here you have a woman who has arguably accomplished nothing, except ride the coattails of her husband’s presidency into the Senate, and then as a most unqualified Secretary of State. Her most notable achievement? Benghazi and the murder of four Americans, including a U.S. Ambassador.
Then there is this president – the most unqualified, arrogant, radical president in history. He gave us a monstrosity “healthcare” law that is destructive to both the medical system of the country, and the economy as a while. Add to this the destructive cost of illegal immigrants encouraged to enter the country, and then made lawful with the stroke of a pen. Then there is the massive number of dropouts from the workforce, with correspondingly massive increases in food stamp recipients. Most admired? Amazing.
Those two, and the support for them, are just the apex of the myriad of problems we face as a nation and a culture. The following list is not complete, but supports enough reason for concern about the future.
A monstrosity with 2.7 million civilian employees (a 47 year low, they are bragging) spread across 15 cabinet offices, dozens of other departments, and hundreds of agencies, consuming $3.5 trillion (yes, that’s $3,500,000,000,000) of which $500 billion was borrowed. In the course of this gargantuan growth, it has expanded itself into every aspect of our lives, in ways we don’t want, don’t require, and that are not constitutionally mandated. Yet there are calls for more of it, and those, like Ted Cruz, who seek to rein the monster in are themselves vilified.
We elected – twice – the most unqualified, secretive, arrogant, racist, Marxist, anti-American, anti-military president in history, and then wonder why we are getting what we have gotten. A devotee of Saul Alinsky and other Socialists, we should not be surprised by his implementation of the Cloward-Piven Strategy of overwhelming all public institutions as a means of achieving socialist ends. What he has done to the health care, immigration and banking systems are just a few examples. It is no revelation that he would circumvent the Constitution and bypass Congress, using Executive Orders and sheer defiance to “rule.”
Because of rules of their own making, Members of Congress have made it virtually impossible to remove even the most derelict of them. Because of those same rules, they have made it possible for one man – Harry Reid, in this case – to literally veto the other 534 members and bring legislative activity to a halt. Congress is no longer representative of the citizens, but a self-contained aristocracy whose sole purpose appears to be the preservation of title and enrichment of its membership. As for the general citizenry – “let them eat cake.”
This amazing framework for the operation of government withstood the tests of time for the first half of its life. During the last century, and especially during the past 50 years, it has been stretched, ignored, reinvented, and trampled. We are no longer a government of laws with it as the supreme law; we are a nation of men: devious, ambitious, self-serving, excessively powerful, and special interest oriented men. Attacks on the 1st Amendment protections of speech and religion are increasing, while attempts to undermine the 2nd Amendment are relentless. Due Process is regularly violated, and the Commerce Clause has been broadened far beyond its original intent to give federal control over every commercial process or transaction. The limits on federal power in Article 1, Section 8 and the 10th Amendment are ignored with impunity. Our Constitution is in shreds.
About the best one can say about them is that they are better than the Democrats – but not much. True Republican and Constitutional principles are embodied not in the philosophy and actions of the Party establishment, but in those of Tea Party and those like Ted Cruz. So what does the Party do? They condone and cooperate with Obama, while they criticize and condemn Cruz and the Tea Party. The Republican establishment is on track to make themselves irrelevant, and simple another version of Democrat.
As many as 20 million non-Americans have crossed our borders illegally and helped themselves to jobs, housing, education, health care and other benefits. Many have been made citizens by way of “birthright citizenship,” because Congress has failed to properly implement the 14th Amendment. Public health problems and crime are significantly impacted by the presence of these illegal residents, but the American citizens are made to feel as if THEY are at fault. The president ignores the Constitution, the Law, and the will of the people and simply confers legal status on a broad swath of the invaders.
New comers to the shores of America came here to be American; they gladly and willingly assimilated the values and culture of this country, leaving theirs behind as a proud heritage. The character of America was strengthened by these new Americans whose motivation was simply freedom. Immigration was balanced as to country of origin, subject to reasonable requirements and timeframes, and LEGAL. Since the 1960s, a new model of immigration emerged. Countries of origin favored Third-world nations and others with collective cultures and values at odds with our own, and little desire to assimilate but rather maintain prior attachments: Hyphenated Americans. We increasingly became a polyglot, and a multi-cultural society, straining the fabric long woven from homogeneity. Since the 1980s the primary mode of entry has been illegal, and that mode has been encouraged though legalization of those here. Today we face an additional threat as we import those of Islamic background, with many among them dedicated to the very destruction of America, and our leadership seems not to notice or not to care.
The institution of slavery was abolished in this country 150 years ago, yet that evil institution continues to be milked as a justification for special treatment and benefits. The fact is, there are racial disparities in many measures of standing or achievement, but the cause are many – and they are NOT the result of some broad based platitude such as “white privilege.” It’s time to take responsibility, promote a work ethic, encourage education, develop positive role models (No, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are not among them) beyond athletes and rap singers, encourage family formation and stability, limit births, and educate young parents on their proper roles. $22 trillion has been spent “fighting” poverty, largely among minorities, and all that has done is create an intergenerational dependence on federal programs. No one wants to stop the gravy train and deal with real causes.
Jobs and the Economy
The oil boom in fracking and “dot.com” expansion similar to the one that propelled the Clinton economy is being hailed by Obama as a success. In fact, like Clinton, he had nothing to do with it. Much of the “success” of this economy, including stock market performance, is due to artificial performance propped up by $18 trillion in debt and artificially low interest rates. REAL economic success is not there except for giant corporations who literally write the rules of the game by buying off politicians, and the various cronies supported by them. Real unemployment is ignored or simply redefined – the actual number is more like 15-20% than 6-7%, with huge numbers underemployed, holding part-time jobs, or having left the market. If you want to know how the economy is doing, ask a shopkeeper with 5-10 employees, not a multi-national monopoly.
The government and the financial giants, the devils spawn of the Federal Reserve System, in concert brought down the economy in 2008. The earlier policies of Jimmy Carter, then Ted Kennedy, and finally Barney Frank and Chris Dodd were directly responsible for the financial meltdown. While it was all happening, Wall Street financiers were making $millions in bonuses, all backed by the U.S. taxpayers. The head of Fannie Mae, the guarantor of many of the “bad” loans took in $90 million. In the aftermath, led by the president, politicians decided to now cure the problem that THEY had caused, by printing money and handing it out to friends and benefactors. They amassed an astronomical debt of $18 trillion and accomplished nothing that the market would not have done more efficiently by itself. GM got bailed out. Solyndra got funded (then went belly-up). The banks got bailed out. Only the American Citizens got the shaft - a common result these days, as politicians seek to pass on blame and vow to “never let it happen again.”
Obama has taken virtually all public lands (including offshore) out of use for oil exploration and drilling; he has declared war on coal energy and vowed to bankrupt any coal plants (assisted by Harry Reid); and continued the 40 year decline in the implementation of any nuclear power plants. Instead he has funneled billions of dollars in to wind and solar with direct and indirect subsidies, only to see one company after another go bankrupt, with no measurable impact on energy production. Thanks to private investment on private lands by private companies, oil is experiencing record production levels, with world markets driving down the price of crude oil and gasoline at the pump. Obama, of course, takes credit. A true energy policy for the country, of course, still does not exist.
The world is a dangerous place with Russia a continued threat (yeah, Obama laughed that off in the Romney debate), China a slumbering but still Communist giant, North Korea continuing menacing threats, and Iran moving forward (without challenge) toward a nuclear capacity. Oh yes, radical Islam is marching over Europe and taking over large swaths of territory pursuing its Caliphate. Deja vu “the Crusades.” Oh yes, ISIS is lopping off the heads of innocent children, adults, Christians, Journalists, and anyone who stands in their way and is unwilling or unable to resist. This president thinks this a good time to reduce our military to the lowest strength since World War II. At the same time, he is ominously purging senior/experienced officer ranks, suggesting a not-so-hidden agenda. Congress, again, fails to act or challenge.
Obama’s approach to world politics is based on moving red lines in the sand, appeasing, accommodating, making questionable deals (like trading a traitor for five terrorists), and giving speeches concerning the evil about which he does nothing. All the while, more Americans have died or been seriously injured in Middle East wars than under the Bush administration. The UN gains unwarranted authority, Iran pursues its nuclear plans, Benghazi is swept under the rug, Russia advances, and Cuba becomes our good buddy. Great foreign policy.
Yes, I wish you a Happy New Year, but wishing and wanting make nothing so. It will take more than wishes to improve our situation here and abroad. It will start with ridding the country of the political plague of the Obama administration. It will continue when the Republicans find their backbone and begin to implement the Cruz policies of the future, and put to rest the McCain policies of the past. It will happen only when we wake up and stop buying into the platitudes of the “hope and change” crowd and get real. The alternatives, even doing nothing, move us closer to "1984"... and that is not a pretty place.
"The ideal set up by the Party was something huge, terrible, and glittering—a world of steel and concrete, of monstrous machines and terrifying weapons—a nation of warriors and fanatics, marching forward in perfect unity, all thinking the same thoughts and shouting the same slogans, perpetually working, fighting, triumphing, persecuting—three hundred million people all with the same face."
- George Orwell, 1984
