THE MEDIA – THEY STILL DON’T GET IT
It’s a Revolution
The so-called “mainstream media,” the NY Times, Washington Post, network television – even Fox News – still don’t get it. Even after a year of tripping over wrong polls and false predictions, they are still trying to fit their observations into a dead political paradigm. Don’t get me wrong. Karl Rove and Charles Krauthammer are still very bright guys (and Juan Williams and Chris Matthews are still idiots). The problem is, these pundits – and the political establishment they represent – just don’t get it.
So here it is, in a nutshell:
The American people are fed up with you experts.
The American people know that the allegiance of the political system – Democrat and Republican – is to the wealthy, the rich and powerful, the celebrities, and the fellow members of “the club.”
The American people don’t believe anything you say because they know you are always advancing an agenda, rather than reporting the news – and you are invariably wrong. You are like a WW I correspondent covering Viet Nam; things keep happening that you are not aware of or prepared for, and all of your expectations fail to happen. You are an anachronism and so wed to your self-image, you can’t see how full of crap you really are.
The patience of the American people has run out, and they are looking outside of convention. They do not want another lying, corrupt, inept, self-serving politician and lemming-like media that gushes at their tired platitudes and false promises. They do not want Hillary Clinton. You keep saying that Donald Trump doesn’t fit the mold of the ideal candidate – the American people WANT someone who doesn’t fit the mold; in fact, they want someone who will shatter the mold. And Trump is doing just that. And you don’t get it.
“Normal” is not
In a “normal” election campaign, Jeb Bush would have been the nominee. He would have had all the money, especially from the global corporatists and big lobbies. His family including two past presidents would have made him superbly “credentialed.” His promises of new and improved (but still based on same old models) government programs would have inspired confidence among the “experts” that he could fix things from the economy to health care to education. We have heard all that garbage before. Over and over. For decades. The “normal” approach doesn’t work anymore. Normal simply means nothing changes. We want “abnormal” – we want truly new ideas. We don’t want tinkering with the irreparably broken behemoth that is our government; we want it replaced, consigning the existing systems to the scrap heap.
The idea of inclusion is pushed by the “experts” because they see the system as a 51-49 game, with the one who promises enough to a few more sycophants, wins. The problem is, you have to sacrifice principles and values to come out on top – and that is not winning. The game is to promise unsupportable minimum wages to those whose performance does not justify the pay. The game is to admit millions of undesirable immigrants and “refugees,” or ignore the illegal entry by millions more. The game is to promise “free this and free that,” while running annual deficits of a half-trillion dollars or more and running up a total deficit of $20 trillion (not even counting another $100 trillion in unfunded promises). The “big tent” is part of the game played by the media “experts” and their preferred candidates. Americans don’t want a big tent – they want a country restored to greatness… and they want a wall.
Unity is to politics what love is to religion. If we are just unified and bipartisan, everything will be wonderful. Like the “big tent,” unity is a sham. Like the big tent, achieving “unity” means, again, sacrificing values and principles to achieve a coalition around an ideology that stands for nothing except self-interest of the insiders. Unity means accommodating divergent interests to achieve the appearance of agreement. It is achieved by giving away portions of the good, and accepting bits of the bad until mediocrity is achieved, making everyone happy. The core goal, of course, is the preservation of control by the insiders. Americans don’t want political unity; they want 100% solutions embracing bold ideas and programs that work. If that scares away some, let them go – straight to hell, if necessary.
What the political parties “stand for” is a myth. It’s not the wealthy or the poor; it’s not the status quo or change; and it’s not diversity or uniformity. The political parties stand for whatever gets them elected and keeps them in power, justifiably enriched in the process. They see-saw control back in forth as the voters are confused by who stands for what, and the answer is revealed in who spends the most money on a “Madison Avenue” road to victory. Donald Trump is accused by the “mainstream” of alienating the traditional members of the party as well as those to enlarge the “big tent.” In fact, the only ones he is putting off are the hard-core party regulars. He is attracting women, Blacks, Hispanics, union workers, police and military, and all others from the broad middle class that has been ignored for far too long.
We Don’t Want Polish
The average American is not a polished speaker. In fact, many “polished” orators either go over the head of regular folks, or they speak with an unauthentic style as they try to sound “regular.” Americans want clear speakers, not polished ones. Ronald Reagan was known as the “great communicator,” not because the words flowed in magical, poetic style. He was so described because he spoke in clear, informative terms that average Americans could understand and make sense of. Obama, for all his soaring oratory, speaks well and says nothing. His promises are hollow, his threats are benign, and his apologies for America are offensive. We don’t need leaders who are polished speakers; we need leaders who speak clearly, talk straight and tell the truth. Among the entire political class, Donald Trump, by his very nature, is the one who seems to get that. He outlasted 16 other candidates who were all, arguably, better speakers as a result.
She’s a Lady
Americans have a special fondness and expectations for their “First Ladies.” The wife of a president isn’t elected, but rather comes as part of the package. From Martha Washington to Laura Bush, America’s First Ladies have shared some common attributes. They have provided support to the leadership of their husbands; they have demonstrated love of their country; and they have maintained a public posture of grace, elegance and simplicity. Most have engaged in some special public project favoring their interests and beliefs. First Ladies are honored by Americans – usually. If Melania Trump was a Democrat, she would be greeted with adulation not seen since Jackie Kennedy. But she is a Conservative.
This is an elegant, accomplished and intelligent woman who delivered a warm, wonderful and highly effective performance on a stage and under circumstances that would humble the best of public speakers. She deserves our accolades. Alas, the remarks from much of the media regarding made-up accusations are utter trash. In contrast to her gracefulness, the media have, once again, shown themselves to be petty, arrogant and classless. They deserve the censure of the American public; they should be ashamed. She has won the hearts of God and country loving Americans. Once again, the “mainstream” is badly out of step.
Who We Are
Americans are tired of being told “who we are,” especially when the remarks do NOT reflect who they are. Americans are welcoming and generous to legal immigrants. That does not mean they support coming here for welfare, criminal activity, as part of a murderous cult masquerading as a religion or to reject assimilation of American culture and values. “Who we are,” is a country with a rich history of accomplishment, sacrifice and values emulated by most of the free world. We are an exceptional country – don’t tell us we are something else, or simply the same as all others. We are a nation founded on Christian principles and a reverence for God and the Bible, along with freedom to personal religious beliefs as we choose. We are not a Muslim country; do not tell us that we are. We are a nation that reveres our police and military for the dedication and sacrifice they make on our behalf; we do not condemn the great many for the actions of the very few. THAT is who we are. We are of many races, nationalities, ethnicities and cultures; the lives of no one group are above those of any other. THAT is who we are.
The World is Waiting for Us
Americans are brash, bold, strong and free. We don’t take instructions from the UN or any other sovereign state. America is the strongest, most successful, most generous and caring country on earth. Through most of our modern history, other nations and people have respected us and depended upon us as allies and friends. The few among our enemies have rightly feared us, and been kept in check as a result. The “mainstream media” has bought into the hand-wringing, apologetic nonsense that has crept into the world arena under this administration. When a defender of American interests like Donald Trump asserts American strength, pride and putting America first, the media recoil as if those are bad things. The American people know otherwise. And so does the rest of the world.
We Get It
The entrenched political and economic interests and the media elite will not yield to change easily. They never have. That is why only 10% of Americans approve of their government, yet return 90% back to office. This time it’s different. Americans are well aware of the fragile state of our Constitution with half of the Supreme Court facing replacement in the next one or two presidential terms. Americans know that our federal government is far too big, far too powerful and far too intrusive in our lives and our freedoms. Americans know that our education and health care systems need better solutions, and not just more money. Americans know that our politicians have become far too comfortable in the trappings of office and need to be turned out and replaced more frequently. Americans know all these things that somehow escape the media. But Americans have a spokesman who knows these things too, and is not timid about calling out the media as well as the political establishment. This is a critical time in our history. Hillary Clinton and the establishment CANNOT be given control of this country. This is a time that calls for a “non-traditional” leader. We have one. The media doesn’t get it. He does.
